9-1-1 Facts:

  • Your house number must be posted on the structure in a location where it can be seen from the street. It's the law in Oswego County!
  • Students with SUNYCO campus telephone service and some commercial locations must dial four digits: 9-9-1-1.
  • 9-1-1 calls from pay telephones are free.
  • Federal law requires that cellular telephone carriers must still allow disconnected cellular telephones to call 9-1-1.
  • Party line telephones will not provide a 9-1-1 automatic location display.
  • The E 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center telecommunicator/call takers answer the 9-1-1 lines and the telephone numbers listed in the telephone directory for reporting "non-emergency" incidents. The difference is that the 9-1-1 lines are used to report emergencies only.

Examples of Emergencies:

  • Someone breaking into your home or a neighbor's home now
  • A shooting
  • A fire
  • A traffic crash involving injury
  • Any medical emergency requiring an ambulance immediately
  • A fight or display of weapons

Examples of Non-Emergencies:

  • Report telephone, power or cable television outages
  • Report an abandoned vehicle, a loud party, a pet-related problem or vandalism
  • Inquire about weather or road conditions
  • Request legal advice
  • Request information
