Camp Hollis Group Begins Membership Drive
Do you or your children have memories of making new friends and sharing adventures at Camp Hollis? Did you or someone in your family ever work at the children's camp on Lake Ontario?
Camp Hollis has provided children in Oswego County a residential camping program for over 50 years. The camp is owned by Oswego County and operated by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.
Former staff and campers who fondly remember the camp and gained some benefit from their time there have the opportunity to join the Friends of Camp Hollis, a not-for-profit support system for the camp. Memberships range in cost from $30 to $190 and are good for one year. Benefits of becoming a member include admission to the camp's annual alumni picnic to be held in July at the campground. A lifetime membership is available for $500.
The group is involved in a series of fundraisers and grant applications to help support the general camp facility as well as provide scholarships for needy families. The membership drive is designed to help with these fund-raising efforts.
"The camp annually serves about 5,000 youth a year, including 1,000 in the summer camp program and the remainder in a diverse series of retreats and special events," said Jane Murphy, treasurer of Friends of Camp Hollis. "Camp Hollis is a unique resource for Oswego County. We are looking for people who know its value to help us out so that the camp may survive and thrive."
The group is also working with the Local Painters' Union DC4 #38 to sponsor its first annual golf tournament. The "captain and crew" competition will take place at Battle Island State Park Saturday, May 22. Local businesses and organizations can help out by either registering a four-person team or by purchasing a sign to be displayed at one of the18 holes on the course. Signs may be purchased for $100.
