Children May Win Cash Prizes in Bird Festival Coloring Contest

The Lake Ontario Bird Festival and the Oswego County Weeklies are sponsoring the third annual coloring contest for children ages four to twelve.

The coloring contest artwork and entry form are being published in the Oswego County Weeklies during the weeks of April 12 and April 19. You may download the coloring poster here with Adobe Acrobat Reader. The deadline to enter is Friday, April 23.

Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in each of three age groups. First place winners will receive $50 cash; second place winners will receive $25 cash; and third place winners will receive $10. Each of the winners will also receive a gift pack of items donated by the bird festival sponsors. Entries will be divided into categories; age four, five and six; ages seven, eight and nine; and ages ten, eleven, and twelve.

Cleveland artist Bob McNamara provided the drawing of a cardinal for the contest. McNamara will lead a nature journaling and illustration workshop at the bird festival, which takes place May 1 and May 2 at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Resort, County Route 16, Mexico.

Mark Backus, publisher of the Oswego County Weeklies, donated space in the community newspaper group to run the contest for two weeks.

"We really appreciate the support of the Oswego County Weeklies, and the lovely design by Bob McNamara," said Barbara Lighthall, co-chairwoman of the Lake Ontario Bird Festival organizing committee. "We encourage children to enter the contest, and visit the bird festival to see their artwork on display."

Completed entries should be mailed to the Oswego County Department of Promotion and Tourism, 46 E. Bridge St., Oswego, 13126. All entries must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, April 23.

Free shuttle buses, provided by A & E Transport, will take visitors to the Derby Hill Bird Observatory and Mexico Point State Park for birding and nature hikes.
