County Health Department Sponsors Drinking Water Contest at Lake Ontario Bird Festival
MEXICO - The Environmental Division of the Oswego County Health Department will hold its annual competition for the best-tasting drinking water in Oswego County Saturday, May 1.
The contest takes place at the Lake Ontario Bird Festival at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park and Campgrounds, County Route 16, Mexico. Visitors to the bird festival will be the judges. Volunteers will taste unidentified samples of drinking water from municipal water systems in the county and choose their favorites.
All municipal water supplies are eligible to compete in the contest. The local winner will advance to a regional contest, and regional winners will compete for the state title at the New York State Fair in August.
"The health department is committed to assuring a quality supply of drinking water for all residents of Oswego County," said Natalie Roy, associate health sanitarian for the Oswego County Health Department. "The drinking water contest helps to make us more aware of the importance of protecting the water resources we enjoy in Oswego County."
The Lake Ontario Bird Festival is a family event with a full schedule of live bird shows, educational workshops, displays, vendors, and an assortment of activities for children. Visitors will have a chance to see and learn more about the fascinating birds of prey that live along and migrate over the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. There is no admission charge. The festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, May 1 and 2.
Free shuttle buses, provided by A & E Transport, will take visitors to the nearby Derby Hill Bird Observatory and Mexico Point State Park for birding and nature hikes.
