Enjoy Summer 2004 in Oswego County
OSWEGO - From kites over Fort Ontario to fireworks, fairs, and historic re-enactments, Oswego County offers a packed schedule of activities for families to enjoy this spring and summer. The Oswego County Department of Promotion and Tourism has compiled a list of over 100 events in its "Summer" brochure. Here's a sample of the activities you can enjoy.
Community Day at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego features a military vehicle show and a kite-flying contest Saturday, May 15. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be an Armed Forces display of American military vehicles, sponsored by the Friends of Fort Ontario. At 2 p.m., the first 200 kids age 14 and younger will receive free kites. The kite-flying contest with prizes and refreshments is co-sponsored by Wal-Mart and the Kiwanis Club of Oswego. For Community Day, there will be free admission to the fort, open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information call 343-4711.
Fulton's 23rd Annual Memorial Day Salute will be Friday and Saturday, May 28 and 29 at Recreation Park, located on NYS Route 3 West. Friday's festivities are from 5 to 11 p.m., with a fireworks display at 10 p.m. and entertainment by Ruby Shooz. Saturday festivities are from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., with a parade at 10 a.m. and entertainment that evening by Freddie "Boom, Boom" Cannon with Gary Dunes. Oswego County Hospice Cup Regatta Family Day is Saturday, June 5, at Breitbeck Park and the McCrobie Building in Oswego. Registration for the 5K Walk/Run for Hope is at 8:45 a.m. The race begins at 10 a.m. Enjoy family fun in Breitbeck Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with entertainment, crafts, and food. The regatta race on Lake Ontario is a qualifying event for the National Hospice Regatta Alliance's 2004 invitational national championship. Wine and Garden Party featuring the "Fabulous Foods of Fulton" and wine from some of the best wineries in New York State will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Voorhees Park, South Third and Buffalo Streets in Fulton. There will be live entertainment for the entire family. Costs are: $15 for food/wine tasting/wine glass; $8 for food only; $10 for wine tasting/ wine glass; $5 for wine tasting; and $3.50 for a glass of wine. For more information call 598-4231.
Parish Arts and Crafts Festival is Saturday, June 19, at the Parish Elementary School yard, 25 Union St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The juried art show features local crafters and artists, along with food and entertainment. Relive the Civil War at Historic Voorhees Park in Fulton Saturday, June 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Throughout the day there will be a Civil War encampment featuring soldiers' military drills and duties, Civil War band and songs, and interpreters from the Farmers' Museum. Presentations include Almeta Whitis' tales of the life of Harriet Tubman, and Howard Edmonds' tales from the Civil War. Admission is free. For more information call 598-4616.
A Strawberry Social and Block Dance with farmer's market and food vendors will be held Friday, June 25, from 3 to 11 p.m. at the Pulaski Historical Society, 3428 Maple Ave. Admission is free. Call 298-4650 for information.
The 147th Oswego County Fair will be held Thursday through Wednesday, July 1 through 7, at the Sandy Creek Fairgrounds. The parade is Thursday at 7 p.m. The fair will be open Friday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Featured attractions include animal shows and contests, demolition derbies, harness racing, truck pulls, a variety of rides, fireworks, live entertainment, and exhibits. Admission is $4 for adults; $2 for senior citizens; $1 for children; and free for children ages five and under. Gander Mountain 10th Annual Oswego County Pro-Am Salmon and Trout Team Tournament is Friday and Saturday, July 9 and 10, in Oswego and Mexico. Amateur and professional teams fish for cash and prizes. View the exciting weigh-in of each team's catch at the weigh station behind Best Western Captain's Quarters Hotel in Oswego. Teams weigh-in each day at 2:30 p.m. Awards are presented Saturday at 5 p.m. Admission is $400 for professional teams and $200 for amateur teams. Spectators are free. The British will invade Oswego once again at the Revolutionary War British Encampment Saturday and Sunday, July 10 and 11 at Fort Ontario State Historic Site. 3rd Annual Sandy Island Beach/Selkirk Shores Triathlon is Sunday, July 11. Registration is at 7 a.m. at Sandy Island Beach State Park. The triathlon begins at 9 a.m. Participants will swim, bike, and run from Sandy Island Beach State Park in Sandy Creek to Selkirk Shores State Park in Pulaski. 25th Anniversary Party and Ice Cream Social commemorating the founding of the Friends of History in Fulton and the Pratt House Museum will be Sunday, July 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the museum, 177 S. Harborfest 2004 takes place Thursday through Sunday, July 22 through 25, in the City of Oswego. Enjoy over 100 choices of admission-free entertainment on six big stages throughout Oswego, juried arts and crafts, and special events. Opening ceremonies will be Thursday in Breitbeck Park at 7 p.m. The "World-Class Fireworks Spectacular" takes place Saturday over the Oswego Harbor at 9:30 p.m. New in 2004, is a day-long air show over the harbor on Sunday. SAIL Oswego Labatt Blue Regatta will be held during Harborfest, Friday through Sunday, July 23 through 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wright's Landing. It's one of the largest regattas on Lake Ontario during the season with 50 to 60 yachts and 300 participants. Spectators are free. Safe Haven's 60th Anniversary Celebration takes place Friday through Sunday, Aug. 6 through 8, commemorating the arrival of European refugees from the Holocaust of World War II at the Fort Ontario Refugee Shelter. There will be a reception for the refugees Friday evening. The public is invited to attend the anniversary dinner Saturday night. A Sunday brunch for the refugees is planned. 6th Annual Parish Volunteer Fire Company Car Show will be held Sunday, Aug. 8, at the Parish Fire Department from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Classic cars from 1900 to 2003 will be displayed along with children's games, music, and food. Native American Heritage will be featured Saturday, Aug. 14, at Lake Neahtahwanta in Fulton from 3 to 7 p.m. The event features Joseph Bruchac, award-winning author and storyteller; James Bruchac, author, wildlife tracker and authority on Native American games; and Roger Perkins, Native American educator presenting Iroquois social songs and dances. A Civil War Encampment at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego takes place Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14 and 15, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 148th NY Infantry and other units will present military drills and ceremonies, along with living history demonstrations. Heritage Day, an annual event to unite the Sandy Creek community in friendship, is Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Oswego County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event features Civil War, Revolutionary War, and French and Indian War re-enactors, people in period dress, and numerous activities such as weaving, quilting, historic displays, an old-fashioned one-room school, hayrides, farmers' market, petting zoo, music, and children's games.
