Ninth Annual Bird Festival is Set for May 7 and 8 in Mexico
MEXICO -- The ninth annual Lake Ontario Bird Festival will take place May 7 and 8 at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Resort on the Little Salmon River near Mexico, NY. The festival features birds, workshops and educational programs, with plenty of activities for children. Several new live bird programs, an expanded marketplace, and a Mother's Day pancake breakfast have been added to this year's festival.
There is no admission charge to the festival. Free shuttle buses will take passengers to the nearby Derby Hill bird observatory and to Mexico Point State Park for birding and nature walks. Derby Hill has been known to attract over 60,000 migrating hawks in a single spring season, and is considered one of the most significant spring hawk migration spots in the nation.
Again this year, the festival committee has partnered with Oswego Harbor Festivals Inc. to help organize the event. Co-chairs are Barbara Lighthall, co-owner of Yogi Bear's, and Betty Green, a member of the Mexico Town Board. Both women are active in the community and have been involved with the festival since its inception.
"Bird fest has always been a family-oriented event that combines educational programs with fun opportunities to learn about our unique habitat along the Lake Ontario shoreline," said Green. "In addition to our perennial favorites, such as the bluebird nesting box project for children, we'll have an expanded vendor area and several more live birds. On Sunday morning, with the help of the Junior ROTC, we'll host a special Mother's Day pancake breakfast. Moms will eat for free."
