Children May Win Cash Prizes in Bird Festival Coloring Contest
Cleveland artist Bob McNamara provides the illustration of a great horned owl for the fourth annual Lake Ontario Bird Festival coloring contest for children age four to twelve. McNamara will lead his popular nature journaling and illustration workshop again at this year's festival, which takes place May 7 and 8 at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Resort, County Route 16, Mexico.
The coloring contest is co-sponsored by the Oswego County Weeklies newspaper group. The entry form is published in the Oswego County Weeklies community newspapers March 29 and 30, and April 5 and 6. The deadline to enter is Friday, April 29.
The bird festival is a free family event with several live bird programs, projects for children, nature workshops, educational displays, and a variety of vendors. Free shuttle buses, provided by A & E Transport Services, Inc., will take visitors to the Derby Hill Bird Observatory and Mexico Point State Park for birding and nature hikes. A pancake breakfast will be served Sunday morning for Mother's Day.
Mark Backus, publisher of the Oswego County Weeklies, donated space in the community newspaper group to run the contest for two weeks. Entry forms are also available on the Oswego County Web site at www.oswegocounty.com
"We really appreciate the support of the Oswego County Weeklies, and the lovely design by Bob McNamara," said Barbara Lighthall, co-chairwoman of the Lake Ontario Bird Festival organizing committee. "We encourage children to enter the contest and visit the bird festival to see their artwork on display."
Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in each of three age groups. First place winners will receive $50 cash; second place winners will receive $25 cash; and third place winners will receive $10.
Completed entries should be mailed or dropped off at the Oswego County Department of Promotion and Tourism, 46 E. Bridge St., Oswego, 13126. All entries must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, April 29.
