2005 Summer Events in Oswego County

There are a variety of activities happening in Oswego County this summer. You'll find over 100 events listed in the "Summer" brochure distributed by the Oswego County Department of Promotion and Tourism. Here's a sample of the activities you can enjoy:

Spring Orienteering takes place Saturday, May 7, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Winona State Forest in Boylston. Using a map and compass, navigate courses on and off the trails in the forest. Lake Ontario Bird Festival takes place Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Resort in Mexico. There will be a variety of workshops, activities and educational displays focusing on migratory birds and their habitat. This family festival includes children's activities such as building bluebird nesting boxes. Browse among more than 30 craft vendors. Admission is free. Spring Wild Edibles Walk and Talk with Nancy Kaiser will be held Sunday, May 15, 2 to 4 p.m., at Mexico Point Park. Admission is free. Donations accepted. For more information call 963-3891 or 963-8216.

Kites Over Fort Ontario in Oswego takes place Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first 200 children age 14 and younger will receive free kites. The whole family can enjoy flying kites in Lake Ontario's dependable breezes. Kites will be available to purchase. There will be contests and prizes, plus refreshments. Artists and kite flyers will be available to provide information. Admission is free. For more information call 343-4711.

24th Annual Memorial Day Salute in Fulton will be held Friday, May 27, 5 to 11 p.m., and Saturday, May 28, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Fulton Community Center. Friday night enjoy rock n' roll with Ruby Shooz at 7 p.m., and fireworks over the lake at 10 p.m. Saturday, the festivities begin with a parade at 10 a.m. Throughout the day there will be live entertainment, magic, many children's activities, rides and refreshments. Saturday night, Beatles Tribute Band "Let It Be" will perform at 7 p.m. Admission is free. For more information call 592-4486.

Deerslayer Bowman's Association IBO Qualifier takes place Sunday, May 29, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., at 8100 NYS Route 104 W in Oswego. There will be 30 life-like 3-D targets set in a wooded environment. Trophies and door prizes will be awarded. Admission is $20 for adults, family rates available. For more information call 342-2407.

Oswego County Hospice Cup Regatta will be held Saturday, June 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Breitbeck Park in Oswego. The winner of the race will compete in the National Hospice Cup Regatta in Annapolis, MD. Bring the entire family, there will be children's entertainment and activities in the park while the sailboats compete on Lake Ontario. A small donation to Hospice is requested for some attractions. Richland Pilots' Association Fly-In/Drive-In Breakfast and Lunch will take place Sunday, June 5, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Richland Airport. Enjoy airplane rides, browse among crafts, buy breakfast and/or lunch, as you watch airplanes flying in from Central NY. Admission is free. For more information call 298-4717.

Oswego County ATV Club Trade Show, Craft Fair, and Flea Market will be held Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at The Town House in Williamstown. Barbecue dinners will be available. Admission is free. Vendor space is $30. For more information call 298-5444.

Ghost Walk with Anne Borick will take place Friday, June 17 at 9 p.m. in Mexico Point Park. Participants are requested to make a donation to the park. For more information call 963-3891 or 963-8216.

Phoenix Independence Day Celebration will be held Friday, June 24, 7 to 9 p.m., at Henley Park. Enjoy music by the Julie Crawford Band and fireworks at dusk. Admission is free. For more information call 695-2801.

Sunday Funday is Sunday, June 26, 1 to 6 p.m., at Mexico Point Park. Family activities include Open Hand Theater, music by Ed Goetz, a stone skipping contest, games, and swimming. Food and refreshments are available. Admission is free. For more information call 963-3891 or 963-8216.

Oswego County Fair will be held Friday, July 1 through Tuesday, July 5, 7 a.m. to midnight, at the Oswego County Fairgrounds in Sandy Creek. Featured attractions include animal shows and contests; demolition derbies; harness racing; along with truck and tractor pulls. Bring the entire family to enjoy fireworks; live entertainment; exhibits; and a variety of rides on the midway. Independence Parade takes place Sunday, July 3, 1 to 3 p.m., in the City of Oswego. The parade travels along Route 104, from East Tenth to Liberty streets showcasing many floats and bands. Gander Mountain 11th Annual Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon and Trout Team Tournament will be held Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9 in Oswego and Mexico. Amateur and professional teams fish for cash and prizes. Come and view the exciting weigh-in of each team's catch. The weigh station is located behind Best Western Captain's Quarters Hotel in Oswego. Teams weigh-in each day at 2:30 p.m., and the awards are presented on Saturday at 5 p.m. Admission is $400 for professional teams and $200 for amateur teams. Spectators are free. Annual Firecracker 1000 and Classic Car Show takes place Saturday, July 9, starting at noon, at the Sandy Pond Sportsman's Association. There will be music, prizes, food and beverages. Admission is $10. For more information call 387-6310.

Salmon River Downriver Race will be held Saturday, July 9 at 4 p.m. The US Canoe and Kayak Team hosts the 3.5- mile race amidst Class II and Class III rapids. The race starts at the County Route 2A bridge and ends at the Black Hole. Admission is $10 per paddlers. Spectators free. For more information call 387-5048.

Band Concert and Fireworks takes place on Sunday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m., at Mexico Point Park. Three bands will perform. Fireworks by Young Explosives. Food and beverages will be available. Admission is free. For more information call 963-3891 or 963-8216.

4th Annual Sandy Island Beach/Selkirk Shores Triathlon will be held Sunday, July 17. The race begins at 9 a.m. from Sandy Island Beach State Park with a 750-yard swim, then a 21-mile bike ride to Selkirk Shores State Park, and ends with a 5-mile run at the park. Registration fees are $35 per person, $60 for a two-person team, and $75 for a three-person team. Spectators are free. For more information call 298-5737 or 387-2657.

Harborfest will be held Thursday, July 28 through Sunday, July 31 in the City of Oswego. Enjoy over 100 choices of admission-free entertainment on six big stages throughout the city, juried arts and crafts, plus special events. Opening ceremonies will be held Thursday in Breitbeck Park at 7 p.m. The "World-Class Entergy Nuclear Fireworks Spectacular" takes place Saturday over the Oswego Harbor at 9:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Novelis Air Show featuring civilian precision aerobatic aircraft and military aircraft of various types over Oswego Harbor starting at 1 p.m. Admission is free. 18th Annual Sail Oswego Regatta takes place during Harborfest, Friday, July 29 and Saturday, July 30, in the Oswego Harbor, starting at 9 a.m. Enjoy one of the largest regattas on Lake Ontario during the season. Oswego Art Association's Open House will be held Friday, July 29 through Sunday, July 31, noon to 4 p.m., in Fort Ontario Park. This exhibition and sale will feature the work of local artists. Sandy Pond Sportsman's Association Annual Clam Bake takes place Saturday, July 30, starting at noon, at 3201 County Route 15 in Sandy Creek. Entertainment will be provided. For admission fees and more information call 387-6310.

Ringgold Fire Department Annual Field Days will be held Thursday, Aug. 4, 6 to 10 p.m., Friday, Aug. 5, 6 p.m. to midnight, and Saturday, Aug. 6, noon to midnight, at the Ringgold Fire Department in Pulaski. Magic in Minetto takes place Saturday, Aug. 6, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Riverside Park. The event features history, music, games, food and family fun. Admission is free. For more information call 343-2393.

Civil War Encampment takes place Saturday, Aug. 6 and Sunday, Aug. 7, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego. 148th, 149th, 150th, and 151st New York Infantry Regiments will take part in drills, military ceremonies, and living history demonstrations. Revolutionary War British Encampment will be held Saturday, Aug. 13 and Sunday, Aug. 14, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego. There will be Revolutionary War drills and living history demonstrations by British, Loyalist, and Native forces. The event is co-sponsored by the 24th Regiment of Foot. Admission will be charged. Parish Volunteer Fire Company's 7th Annual Car Show takes place Sunday, Aug. 14, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Union and Church streets in Parish. Along with the display of cars, there will be music, children's activities, contests, and vendors. Trophies will be awarded. Admission is $3 per person. The fee to enter a car in the show is $10. Midsummer's Eve will be held Tuesday, Aug. 16 through Thursday, Aug. 18, 7 to 9 p.m. at Mexico Point Park. Enjoy an evening of medieval fun, food, and music. Admission is $20 per person. For reservations call Betty at 963-7657.

Summertime Birds will be featured Wednesday, Aug. 24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Rice Creek Field Station in Oswego. Many land birds are headed south in August. Join a pleasant walk seeking local breeders and early migrants on this foray of a Lake Ontario birding hotspot. Pre-registration is required before Aug. 15. Admission is free. Tales of the Haunted Harbor takes place Friday, Aug. 26 at 8:45 p.m. at the H. Lee White Marine Museum in Oswego. Renowned storyteller Rosemary Nesbitt spins ghost tales outside Derrick Barge No. 8.
