Mexico Wins Oswego County Drinking Water Contest
MEXICO -- By a 1-sip margin, the village of Mexico continues to hold the title for the best-tasting drinking water in Oswego County. Five municipalities entered the fifteenth annual drinking water contest, held May 7 at the Lake Ontario Bird Festival in Mexico.
Mexico edged out Pulaski with 86 points to Pulaski's 85. The Sandy Creek/Lacona water district came in third with 79 points. Also competing were the Orwell and Oswego water districts.
The taste test is coordinated by the environmental division of the Oswego County Health Department. People were asked to vote for their first and second choices of water samples. First choice votes were given two points and second choice votes were given one point.
Mexico's water will be entered in a regional competition. Finalists from the regional competitions will compete at the New York State Fair for the state's best-tasting drinking water, a title held by Mexico in 2002 and 1991.
