Rosamond Gifford Foundation Awards $25,000 Grant for Camp Hollis Scholarships
A week at summer camp will be more accessible to Oswego County children this summer, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Rosamund Gifford Foundation. The grant was awarded to Friends of Camp Hollis, Inc. to provide scholarships for children age 8 to 13 who otherwise may not be able to afford the registration fee for a week at Camp Hollis.
Located west of Oswego on the shore of Lake Ontario, Camp Hollis is owned by Oswego County and operated by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau The camp serves nearly 800 children each summer and employs about 30 seasonal staff. The camp is open for seven 1-week sessions from early July through late August. Children participate in a range of activities that include archery, canoeing, crafts, swimming, nature education, and theater.
Families may apply for a full or partial scholarship to cover the registration fee. There are still openings available this summer.
"This is the third year that Friends of Camp Hollis, Inc. has received funding from the Rosamond Gifford Foundation," said Kathleen Fenlon, director of the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau. "The scholarship program served over 950 Oswego County youth with funds from the first two years of the grant. We will be assisting many families again this year."
The grant will supplement $10,000 raised by Friends of Camp Hollis Inc., a not-for-profit organization that works to develop and promote Camp Hollis.
"This is an outstanding opportunity for the Friends of Camp Hollis and the Oswego County community," said board president Vicki Mather. "The friends organization is so proud and grateful to the Rosamond Gifford Foundation to have received this financial support. We hope that the community rallies around us as we continue to strive to raise the matching funds necessary. This challenge is one we are confident that we can achieve because Oswego County loves Camp Hollis. Parents know the importance of a Camp Hollis summer for their children or grandchildren because so many parents were campers there once themselves."
