County Offers Assistance with Medicare Part D Prescription Benefit
The Oswego County Office for the Aging has scheduled a series of meetings to help people who receive Medicare benefits better understand the changes in Medicare prescription drug coverage that will take effect next January.
Medicare beneficiaries will receive letters and informational materials from Social Security and Medicare explaining this new aspect of Medicare.
"It is our goal to address the confusion Medicare beneficiaries may encounter when trying to sort through the information regarding Medicare Part D and to help direct them to make a choice that best suits their needs," said Larry Schmidt, director of the Oswego County Office for the Aging.
The new Medicare Part D will offer a variety of prescription drug coverage plans. The estimated monthly premium is $32. There are several requirements for deductibles and co-payments. Open enrollment for the new plan starts Nov. 15, with coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2006. People who do not enroll before May 15, 2006 will be required to wait until next November to enroll and will pay a higher monthly premium.
Informational meetings are scheduled for the following senior citizen groups:
"The Social Security Administration is offering assistance to help cover the costs of the monthly premiums, deductible, and co-payments," said Schmidt. "Contact the Oswego County Office for the Aging to help determine if you qualify for the extra help."
