Enjoy Holiday Traditions in Oswego County
OSWEGO - Oswego County will be bustling with activity this holiday season. Santa will arrive by Coast Guard cutter in Oswego, and by fire engine in West Monroe, as communities celebrate their unique holiday traditions.
Christine Gray, director of the County Department of Promotion and Tourism, said there are many festivities and unique shopping opportunities listed in "Winter in Oswego County Calendar of Events," produced and distributed by the Oswego County Department of Promotion and Tourism. Following is a sample of events for families to enjoy.
Christmas in the Country will be held Nov. 19 and 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Village of Hannibal. This community-wide celebration will include the eighth annual craft show, breakfast with Santa, lunch, "how-to" seminars, wine tasting, gift shopping, tree lighting, entertainment, caroling and more. Many of the town's organizations and businesses will be participating. Admission is free. For more information call 564-5479.
Holiday Wreath Sale will be open from Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 25 to Dec. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the West Monroe Historical Society, 2355 NYS Rte. 49. Hand-decorated evergreen wreaths, 12 inches and larger will be available. Prices begin at $10. Admission is free. Call 676-7414 for more information.
Annual Poinsettia Open House will be held Nov. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oliver B. Paine Greenhouses near Fulton. See thousands of blooming poinsettias and a 12-foot high poinsettia tree. Enjoy live holiday music by local recording artist Dan Duggan on his hammered dulcimer. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free. For more information call 592-2773.
Annual Parade of Trees Contest in Fulton takes place daily from Nov. 28 to Dec. 9 at the Pratt House Museum in Fulton. Christmas trees are decorated in various themes by local non-profit groups and organizations. Visitors at the museum can vote for their favorite trees weekdays from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information call 598-4616.
City of Oswego Children's Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Oswego City Hall Civic Plaza. There will be a live Nativity scene and a musical performance. At 6 p.m. see the lighting of the city tree and menorah. There will be poetry readings by fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students. Santa will visit the children. Admission is free. The Holiday History Shoppe will be open Dec. 1 through Dec. 4 on West First Street, downtown Oswego. Shoppe hours are Thursday and Friday from 3 to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The H. Lee White Marine Museum, Safe Haven Museum, Friends of Fort Ontario, Oswego County Historical Society, Heritage Foundation of Oswego County, and the Greater Oswego Chamber of Commerce have organized the shoppe to provide unique gifts in a historic atmosphere. Olde-Fashioned Oswego Christmas will be held Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oswego Community Christian School. Ski and Winter Recreation Sale will be held Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sandy Creek High School. Dan Duggan and Peggy Lynn: Holiday Show will be held Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. Dan Duggan is known nationally for his wizardry on hammered dulcimer and flat-picking guitar, and Peggy Lynn is recognized nationwide for her soulful songwriting and extraordinary vocal versatility.
