Oswego County Will Observe 'Go Red for Women' Day Feb. 3
OSWEGO - Women and men are encouraged to support the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign by wearing something red on Friday, Feb. 3. Oswego County Legislature Chairman Russ Johnson proclaimed Feb. 3 as Go Red for Women Day to support the national award-winning campaign that focuses on raising awareness of heart disease.
"Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death among women. Upstate New York has the highest rate of death for stroke victims in the country," said Kim Seymour, corporate events director for the American Heart Association in Central New York. "This is especially alarming because 63 percent of women who died suddenly of coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms."
Feb. 3 has been designated as a national day to wear something red and "take heart" in women's health.
"One in four adults suffers from a form of cardiovascular disease in the U.S.," said Legislature Chairman Johnson. "It's important that each one of us learns about good heart health and that our loved ones are aware of the symptoms of heart disease. Many workplaces are encouraging employees to donate $5 to the American Heart Association and wear something red on Feb. 3."
Seymour said that funds raised through the campaign will be used for research and education programs to prevent and treat heart disease. The Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by Macy's and Pfizer with additional support from Bayer and PacifiCare.
