12th Annual Oswego County Pro-Am Salmon and Trout Team Tournament Returns to Ports of Mexico and Oswego July 7 & 8

Join in the fun and competition as the Oswego County Pro-Am Salmon and Trout Team Tournament celebrates its twelfth year July 7 and 8 in the ports of Oswego and Mexico.

“Last year, 78 teams participated in the two-day tournament,” explained Capt. Troy Creasy of Pulaski, event organizer along with the Pulaski-Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce.

“Although we are still actively seeking a title sponsor, the tournament is alive and well. The Pro-Am event is the perfect stage to present fishing tackle and information to an eager audience of over 400 anglers in our Oswego County event alone,” added co-coordinator Shelley Creasy.

Professional and amateur teams compete in the two-day tournament. Last year, anglers from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Vermont competed in the event.

Teams can fish out of either the port of Mexico or the port of Oswego. Weigh-ins, the tournament barbecue, and awards ceremony will all be held at the tournament headquarters tent behind the Best Western Captain’s Quarters Hotel, 26 E. First St., in Oswego.

The events start on Wednesday, July 5, with the third annual sportsmen’s flea market, open to the public, from 1 to 7 p.m. under the tent. The captains’ meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 6. The chicken barbecue dinner will be held under the tent at the weigh-in site Friday, July 7, at 5:30 p.m.

The Oswego County Pro-Am is one of three tournaments that comprise the Lake Ontario Challenge Cup Series. The Niagara County tournament, June 3 and 4, and Wayne County tournament, July 14 and 15, complete the Challenge Cup Series on Lake Ontario. Professional and amateur teams fishing in all three tournaments vie for the Lake Ontario Challenge Cup.

This year, tournament officials are instituting a separate registration fee for the Lake Ontario Challenge Cup series. Any team entering must pay a separate $250 entry fee prior to the Niagara County tournament registration deadline. There will be a 100 percent payback, paying down three spots. Teams need only the captain or two team members to fish in all three tournaments. The cup and prize money will be awarded at the Wayne County tournament awards ceremony on July 15.

This year, Orleans County will host its first Pro-Am Tournament June 9 and 10 as the Lake Ontario Pro-Am series continues to expand. The tournament will be presented by the Oak Orchard Business Association, Orleans County Chamber of Commerce, and Orleans County Department of Tourism. For more information, call (585) 682-4925 or 585-590-6000. (Note: This tournament will not be part of the Challenge Cup in 2006).

The deadline for mail-in registration for the Oswego County Pro-Am is Friday, June 30. Walk-in registration ends Monday, July 3 at noon at the Pulaski-Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, 3044 NYS Route 13 in Altmar. Entry fees are $300 for each amateur team, and $500 for each professional team.
