High School Students Can Sign Up for Youth Court Training
OSWEGO -- The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau will sponsor a training program for new members to the Oswego City-County Youth Court program July 17 through 21 at the McCrobie Building, 41 Lake St., Oswego. Area high school students who will be in grades 9 through 11 this fall are invited to participate.
“Youth Court is a diversion program that is aimed at reducing juvenile delinquency in Oswego County,” said Kathleen Fenlon, director of the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau. “Young people who have been charged with a violation or misdemeanor are referred by local law enforcement officials to Youth Court. Their cases are heard by students who have been trained as judges, defense attorneys, prosecuting attorneys and court clerks.”
Youth Court members conduct hearings and decide on the outcome and punishment for each case. Members receive community service hours for their time and learn how the legal system works.
For more information or to sign up, call the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau at 349-3451 or 1-800-596-3200, ext. 3451, and ask for Dan Reynolds or Brian Chetney.
