Fishing Tournament Helps Children with Cancer
The Oswego County Pro-Am Salmon and Trout Team Tournament has a history of benefiting the community. The 2006 event, set for July 7 and 8 in the ports of Oswego and Mexico, will help children with cancer in Oswego, Niagara, Wayne and Orleans counties.
Since its inception in 1995, the Oswego County tournament has donated a portion of entry fees -- over $15,000 to date -- to conservation projects such as net-penning young fish to increase survivability for lake fish stocking programs. The tournament’s new title sponsor, Health Imaging, Inc., based in Webster, NY, brings a new aspect to the event. This year, which marks the 12th consecutive Pro-Am tournament, an Oswego County child will receive a free Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan valued at $5,000.
A PET scan is a form of diagnostic imaging that examines the human body on the metabolic level. A full body PET scan takes about 30 minutes and can detect diseases such as cancer at a very early stage, many times before any symptoms are present, according to Craig Danzig, president of Health Imaging, Inc.
“The PET scans will be donated to a needy child in each county involved with the Pro-Am, because many children with cancer are not able to receive proper diagnostics and treatment,” said Danzig.
In addition to the PET scan donation, Danzig will coordinate a fundraising auction during the tournament’s Friday night BBQ dinner July 7 in Oswego. The barbecue starts at 5:30 p.m. under a tent behind the Best Western Captain’s Quarters Hotel, 26 E. First St., Oswego. Guests will also have a chance to purchase raffle tickets for a variety of products and gift certificates.
“The public is welcome to come for the auction and dinner,” said Shelley Creasy, a member of the tournament organizing committee. “A limited number of meals are available to the public for $12 each.”
The auction will feature and plants, outdoor living items, and home and yard décor, and is also open to the public. Proceeds will support the tournament and the Wayne County Children’s Cancer Fund, an organization that Health Imaging works closely with.
Since its inception, the Pro-Am Tournament has been part of the Lake Ontario Challenge Cup Series with tournaments in Niagara, Orleans, and Wayne counties. Health Imaging is providing cash and product, including the PET scans and auction merchandise, to all four events.
Tournament activities start Wednesday, July 5, with the third annual Sportsmen’s Flea and Craft Market from 1 to 7 p.m. The flea market is open to the public and takes place under the tent behind the Best Western Captain’s Quarters Hotel.
Team captains and observers meet Thursday at 7 p.m. Fishing competition is from 6 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Teams will set out from the ports of Oswego and Mexico and fish Lake Ontario for the biggest and best fish. Both days, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., the public is invited to watch the exciting weigh-in under the tent, where each team’s catch is added to the standings.
The awards ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday. State Assemblyman Will Barclay, 124th District, is scheduled to participate in the awards ceremony. The Oswego County event officially ends with a fishing trip and picnic for Parents of Special Children, Inc., hosted at Mike’s Marina in Mexico, NY.
“The Oswego County Pro-Am Tournament committee is thrilled to be able to help the Wayne County Children’s Cancer Fund and a local child battling a chronic illness, through the generosity of our title sponsor, Health Imaging, Inc.,” Creasy said. “The support of all our sponsors makes the Pro-Am a success.”Sponsors of this year’s event include All Seasons Sports, A-Tom-Mik Trolling Flies, B & W Bait & Tackle, Best Western Captain’s Quarters Hotel, Big Al’s Tackle Shop, The Boat Doctors, Brenda’s Motel, Brennan’s Greens, Burke’s Home Center, Butler Disposal, C & B Farm & Garden, Colosse Cheese Store, Creative Images, Designs of Elegance, Dick’s Auto, Domino’s Pizza, Douglaston Salmon Run;
