Camp Hollis Celebrates 60th Anniversary July 22
Friends of Camp Hollis will host a 60th anniversary celebration at 2 p.m. July 22 at Camp Hollis, Lakeshore Road, Town of Oswego. The community, former staff and campers are invited.
The Oswego County children’s camp, located in the town of Oswego on the shore of Lake Ontario, hosts 100 boys and girls for an overnight camp every week during the summer. Camp Hollis is operated by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau and supported by the Oswego County Legislature, Friends of Camp Hollis, and several volunteers, businesses and community groups.
The friends group has organized several activities for the July 22 celebration with a cookout at 5 p.m. and campfire Saturday evening. The event will be held rain or shine. Bathing suits and sneakers are suggested.
“Our mission is to provide a support system which raises capital, receives grants, and accepts in-kind donations to maintain and improve Camp Hollis and its programs, while keeping the camp experience within reach of all county residents,” said Vicki Mather, president of the friends group, “We raise money to provide scholarships and raise awareness so that the good things that are happening at camp are well-known.”
Mary Slimmer, publicity chair, said part of the celebration will focus on sharing photographs and memories. Among them is the story of Clarence and Eunice Nichols McKinstry, who met as counselors at Camp Hollis 60 years ago. After dating for a few years they were married.
“At that time there was only one building where everything happened,” said Slimmer. “This facility was very close to the lake, so from the moment the campers were awake until bedtime, they were involved with activities involving the water. Besides the children whom they adored, Clarence and Eunice admit that meeting each other was the best experience for them at Camp Hollis. They are forever grateful to Judge Gene Sullivan, who invited them to be counselors at Camp Hollis 60 years ago, for the cherished memories and enhancement of their lives.”
Friends of Camp Hollis will hold its annual meeting during the anniversary celebration. New members are welcome.
There is no charge for Friends of Camp Hollis members. The cost for dinner is $5 for non-members and $15 per family. Guests are asked to bring a snack or dish to pass. To reserve a spot, call 349-3451 or 349-3241.
