County DSS Invites Community to Oct. 10 Informational Meeting about Adoption
MEXICO -- The Oswego County Department of Social Services invites people who are thinking about adopting a child to an informational meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the DSS office on Spring Street, Mexico.
Frances Lanigan, Commissioner of Social Services, said agency staff will explain the process for adopting children through the Department of Social Services. Lanigan said children who are waiting to be adopted through DSS have often been in foster care for a period of time. Many of them are age eight or older, and have special needs.
The Oct. 10 meeting is a pre-requisite to a five-week training program for people who want to become adoptive or foster parents. The pre-certification training, which is entitled “Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting – Group Process Selection,” will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 21 through Nov. 18. Single and two-parent families may apply to become foster or adoptive parents. In a two-parent household, both parents must attend the training.
