Jerry Thomas Steps Down from County Legislature
Jerry Thomas, one of the longest-serving members of the Oswego County Legislature, submitted a letter of resignation to Legislature Chairman Russ Johnson on Monday, April 2.
Thomas said his health prevents him from continuing to serve as a County Legislator.
I enjoyed working with people and representing the constituents up here, said Thomas. It was tough for me to write that letter, but I don't believe in hanging around if I can't hold up my end of the stick.
Thomas has represented District 1, which encompasses the towns of Sandy Creek, Boylston and Redfield, since January 2004. Prior to his current term, he represented the town of Sandy Creek on the Legislature for seven years, from May 1984 to May 1991.
I have a profound respect for Legislator Thomas and all that he's contributed to the community, said County Legislature Chairman Russ Johnson. My heart goes out to him and his family. He's been an excellent legislator who has oftentimes provided me with counsel and advice from his many years in public service. I will personally miss him dearly. He is a trusted friend.
Thomas was appointed chairman of the Legislature's Health and Human Services Committee in January, and also served on the Finance and Personnel Committee. He previously served as chairman of the Community and Consumer Affairs and Buildings and Grounds committees.
He and his wife Maryhelen moved to Sandy Creek in 1968 and share a long history of involvement in community organizations. Thomas spent 30 years as a member of the fire and rescue companies in Belleville, Lacona and Sandy Creek, working his way up through the ranks to chief, and has been involved with the Sandy Creek Fair since 1981, when the fair almost closed due to lack of support. The Oswego County Fair will celebrate its 150th anniversary this summer.
The County Legislature will appoint a new District 1 legislator to complete Thomas's term of office, which ends Dec. 31 of this year.
