AmeriCorps Announces Three VISTA Positions in Oswego County
Three AmeriCorps VISTA members will be serving in Oswego County through the Serve New York AmeriCorps VISTA Program. Applications are currently being accepted for positions with Oswego AmeriCorps, Rural and Migrant Ministry of Oswego County and Friends of Camp Hollis.
“Serve New York members work to increase capacity in non-profit organizations while empowering the community with tools to promote self sufficiency,” said Kathleen Fenlon, Director of the Oswego city-county Youth Bureau. “Members commit to a year of service in which they not only lead the community, but are a part of it, and not only change the world but are changed by it.”
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, an undergraduate degree is encouraged. Applicants should be enthusiastic, committed to an ethic of service and interested in serving the community. Communication and writing skills are a plus, as well as self initiative and past experience in volunteering in the non-profit sector.
A VISTA member is paid a $10,380 annual salary, with a $4,725 education award or a $1,200 cash stipend of appreciation presented at the end of a year of service. The positions are for one year, with the possibility of a second and third year. Health care, child care and life insurance are available, as well as intensive training.
The Oswego AmeriCorps VISTA member will recruit and manage volunteers for National Days of Service events and recruit applicants for AmeriCorps member positions. The member will also develop and implement public relations initiatives to advance these goals. This member will be located at the Oswego AmeriCorps office at the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau in Oswego.
A VISTA member at Rural and Migrant Ministry of Oswego County, Inc. (RMMOC) will serve as outreach program coordinator. The member will design outreach materials; update the Web site; create a donor database and generate mailing lists; recruit and coordinate volunteers; manage client requests; and assist with adult, child and parenting groups. Applicants must be competent with Microsoft Office Suite. Web site experience is a plus. The VISTA member will work out of the RMMOC office in Richland.
The Friends of Camp Hollis VISTA member will work to ensure that no Oswego County child is unable to experience a Camp Hollis summer because of financial restrictions. The member will reach outlying areas of the county that are presently under served; compile a database of staff, camper alumni and donors; and help with fund raisers. This member will be located at the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau in Oswego.
