Tall Ship Windy II Will Stop in Oswego
The tall ship Windy II will be docked in Oswego during the weekend of Oct. 27 and 28.
Oswego - The tall ship Windy II will dock in Oswego on Saturday, October 27 at the historic west side pier near the H. Lee White Marine Museum. The time of the ship's arrival will depend on weather conditions. The ship's crew expects to remain in Oswego for approximately three days.
“The Windy II came to Oswego in 2001 and this trip will be her final visit,” said Captain Dick Pfund, Fleet Coordinator for the Oswego Maritime Alliance. “This will be the last time people will be able to see her because she is being repositioned to be used as a sail charter service. The really interesting part of this trip is that she will travel through the New York State Canal System as she makes her way to the east coast. This means that people can view the tall ship as she navigates the Oswego River and continues along the Erie Canal.
“The tentative schedule for the Windy II will take approximately four days. She will stop at Brewerton public dock on the first night, Little Falls canal terminal on the second night, Amsterdam Lock No. 11 on the third night and find her way to the end of the canal in Waterford, N.Y. on the fourth day,” continued Capt. Pfund.
The Windy II is a 150-foot traditional four-masted barquantine and the first of her class to be U.S. certified since the 1920s. Launched on June 16, 2000 in Charleston, S.C., she was built of modern materials as a representation of the commercial sailing vessels in operation during the early 1900s. The Windy II is the largest U.S. Coast Guard certified sailing ship on the Great Lakes and can fly up to 14 sails.
Captain Bob Marthai, owner of the Windy II, designed her to give people a safe and enjoyable experience on an authentic tall ship.
Although there are no tours or excursions during her visit, the public is invited to come down to the west pier near the H. Lee White Marine Museum in Oswego to view the Windy II.
