OSWEGO, NY -- Captain Patrick Thayer and Red Line fishing team led 38 professional fishing teams to win Oswego County's 14th annual Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon and Trout Team Tournament Sunday, July 13. Team Sparks, led by Larry Williams of Wharten, NJ won the amateur division in a field of 24 teams.
Thayer, of Milton, VT, charters out of Mike's Marina in Mexico, NY. He and his crew, Dan and Glen Peschler of Port Ontario, NY, and Tim Sherwood of Camden, NY fished their home territory of Mexico Bay focusing on brown trout to earn a total of 381.25 points.
Teams are awarded 10 points per fish and one point per pound.
“We knew the kings were inconsistent so we turned our efforts to browns,” said Thayer. They brought in one salmon on Saturday and the rest of their winning catch consisted of 23 brown trout. Thayer credits his crew, which also included Toby Workman from Sandy Creek in the observer slot, for their first place victory.
“I couldn't do what I do without them,” he said. They used a combination of A-Tom-Mik flies and copper trolling wire with Michigan stingers, earning $5,000 along with a merchandise package valued at $5,000.
“Persistence and A-Tom-Mik flies” were the winning ingredients for Team Sparks in landing three kings and a steelie on Saturday and five kings on Sunday. The Sparks crew, including Lester Zimmerman of Thompson, PA and Scott Wagner of Wharton, NJ, have fished together for five years. This was their second year fishing the Pro Am tournament.
