White Cane Safety Day
Oct. 15 was designated by Congress in 1964 as “White Cane Safety Day” across the U.S. to remind drivers to yield the right of way to pedestrians who are using metallic or white-colored canes. Sabine Ingerson, executive director of ARISE, and Betsy Copps, A. L. Lee Memorial Hospital representative on the Vision Network, receive a proclamation for White Cane Safety Day from Legislator John Proud, District 7, chairman of the Legislature's Health and Human Services Committee. From left are committee members Daniel Chalifoux, District 19; Morris Sorbello, District 23; Legislator Proud, Ingerson, Copps, and legislators Margaret Kastler, District 1; Douglas Malone, District 20; and Arthur Gearsbeck, District 6.
