Oswego County Offers Winter Fun

OSWEGO COUNTY -Whether you're interested in sled dogs, snow softball, ice fishing, sled dogs or building a snowman, you'll find great winter activities in Oswego County this month!

There is something for the whole family at the Cleveland Winterfestival on Saturday, Feb. 14. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., warm up your winter blues with a hot dog roast at the Cleveland Methodist Church or a chili cook-off at the American Legion Post #858. Learn about “Ice and Winter Safety” and “Winter First Aid” with two programs sponsored by the Cleveland Fire Department and the North Shore Ambulance Squad.

Join in the Snowpeople Sculpture Contest in front of the village hall and play Soccer in the Snow with the North Shore Soccer League. Cross-country skiing is available at the Vanderkamp Ecumenical Center and Vella's Northshore Market hosts a bake sale. Admission is free for most events during the day.

In the evening, return to the American Legion Post #858 for a romantic Valentine's Day Dinner Dance. Hors d'oeuvres are served at 6:30 p.m. followed by either a roast beef or roast pork dinner at 7 p.m. The Fabulous Locknutz provide musical entertainment from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance at the legion hall.

On Saturday, Feb. 14, join the 22nd annual Softball in the Snow for Special Olympics. This family-friendly tournament runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Leighton and Oswego High School fields. Unlimited players are permitted on each team and the entry fee is $10 per player. Games are played snow or shine with single elimination. To sign up for the event, call 342-1899.

The Sandy Pond Sportsman's Club hosts their 33rd annual Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday, Feb. 14 and Sunday, Feb. 15. Trek carefully onto the ice and cast your line from 5 a.m. until dark each day. Reel in the winning catch for a 100 percent payback on pike and perch. The final weigh-in is at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The derby is open to adults and children. Breakfast and lunch will be served on both days. For entry fees, call 387-6310.

Cheer on your favorite sled dog team in the Tug Hill Challenge on Saturday, Feb. 14 and Sunday, Feb. 15. The races run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at the Winona Forest Recreation Area in Boylston. The Pennsylvania Sled Dog Club sponsors this free event.

Later this month, join the Snowmobile Trail Ride to support the Golisano's Children's Hospital. Sponsored by the Fulton Area Snow Travelers, the ride begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 21. Entry fees are $15 for adults, $10 for adult passengers and $7 for children ages 10 to 14 years. For an application, call 593-1274.

Come back to the Winona Forest Recreation Area in Boylston for more sled dog racing on Saturday, Feb. 21 and Sunday, Feb. 22. Get caught up in the racing excitement at the Mannsville Quest from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This free event is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Sled Dog Club.
