Office for the Aging Announces Caregiver Support Groups
The Oswego County Office for the Aging sponsors caregiver support groups in Oswego, Fulton, and Constantia to assist those who are caring for older people in their homes.
“Support groups give people a chance to meet others and share practical advice and tips on coping with challenges in a supportive and friendly atmosphere,” said Margaret Waters, caregiver support group coordinator for the Office for the Aging. “If you're caring for an older person, there may be times when you feel you're the only person in the world in your situation, but the truth is, you're not alone!”
Caregiver services are vital to keeping older people in their homes. Family caregivers provide over 80 percent of the care given to older people, according to Larry Schmidt, Administrator of the Office for the Aging.
Support groups offer a friendly atmosphere for people to share their concerns about managing the practical and emotional aspects of caring for a senior loved one with physical or mental limitations. Individual counseling is available over the phone, in the office, or in the home if necessary.
Additional support groups in Oswego County offer assistance to those caring for people with Alzheimer's, MS, bereavement needs, and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.
Caregiver support groups meet at the following times and places:
