County Legislators Meet Phoenix Wrestling Team

The Phoenix Firebirds Wrestling Team, NYS Division II champions, were special guests at the February meeting of the Oswego County Legislature. Legislature Chairman Barry Leemann presented a proclamation honoring the team's accomplishments to coach Gene Mills (center) and legislators representing areas of the Phoenix School District congratulated the team. They include Morris Sorbello, District 23; Barbara Brown, District 8; Linda Lockwood, District 11, Arthur Ospelt, District 12, and Robert Hayes, District 10.


Over the weekend the Phoenix Wrestling Team won its 3rd consecutive Division II Team title with 182 points over 2nd place South Jeff 148.5, 3rd went to Holland Patent with 106.5, 4th IHC with 100.5. None of the other 30 plus teams scored over 100 points.

The team was led by the Crisafulli brothers Kyle and Mark. At 112 lbs, Kyle won a 6-0 match over undefeated returning state placewinner Ken Eaton (40-0) of Adirondack while Mark major decisioned veteran Joe Beach 11-3 for the 145 lb title.

Finalists that lost heartbreakers in the finals were 8th grader Nick Tighe lost a tough fought 3-2 decision to returning State Runner up Dylan Kavanaugh of VVS. Freshman Tyler Button and Austyn Hayes both lost tight matches with Tyler losing 5-3 overtime to Jared Soule of Sandy Creek and Austyn losing to senior Brian Piarulli 10-8. Austyn was losing 7-1 and stormed back to close the gap 10-8, but the time ran out. Junior Caleb Wallace beat returning state placer Nick Lalone of Cato 8-7 in the semi finals before losing a close 4-2 match to last years State Champ Antonio Doldo of IHC-Watertown. Both Senior Talon Sotherden and Junior Seth Allen lost first rounds of the tourney to storm back the hard way and avenge their losses and win 3rd place honors. Talon beat Dan Walts of VVS for 3rd place 4-0 while Seth avenged his loss beating Cliff Moulton of South Jeff 7-1. Adam Smith placed forth losing twice to Brian Murray of Jordan Elbridge, but was beating returning 5th in the State Chris Pike of Sherburne Earlville 10-0 when Adam pinned him. Junior Aaron Webster injury defaulted back to 6th place. With only 3 seniors competing this weekend Mark Crisafulli, Talon Sotherden and Adam Smith, the futures look bright for the Firebirds.

This upcoming weekend is the New York State Championships at the Pepsi Arena in Albany. The past 2 years Kyle placed 1st and 2nd in the States, while Markie place 5th, then 3rd last year. Kyle & Mark Crisafulli solidified their opportunity to continue on to next weeks Championsips while Nick Tighe, Talon Sotherden, Seth Allen, Tyler Button, Caleb Wallace & Austyn Hayes have to wait till Tuesday to see if the are granted At Large Bids to compete at the State Championships.

The Team closes it's season this year repeating as Section III Dual Meet Champions, 3 peating winning the Class B Sectional Championships and 3 peating winning the Division II Sectional Championships.
