Pulaski Youth Receives Award from NYS Association of Youth Bureaus
Andrew Nicholson of Pulaski is one of 25 young people across the state to receive the first annual Ann M. Irvin Youth Recognition Award from the Association of New York State Youth Bureaus. Andrew received the award earlier this month at the association's annual Youth Forum event in Albany. He was nominated by Oswego City-County Youth Bureau Director Kathleen Fenlon.
“Andrew has been an active participant in local Youth Bureau programs for four years,” said Fenlon. “As a freshman, he was a member of the Leadership Oswego County Youth Program. The next year, he was trained to be a member of Youth Court. He has shown the natural ability to work well with others and take direction, while focusing on teamwork and getting the job done. Andrew continues to expand his leadership by volunteering at various youth-related projects.”
A senior at Pulaski Junior-Senior High School, Andrew is the son of Lamont and Carolyn Nicholson.
Fenlon said the award was created by the association of youth bureaus in memory of Ann M. Irvin, a long-term Youth Bureau director from Nassau County, who passed away in 2008.
“Ann was a true leader in the field of youth and family development throughout New York State. Core to her life's work was her belief that every youth has inherent strengths and assets to achieve success given the appropriate supports and opportunities. We were proud to nominate Andrew for this award. His leadership skills have continued to develop during his high school years, and he is a great role model for other youth,” Fenlon said.
