Oswego County Voters Can Check Out New Machines at County Fair
SANDY CREEK - Visitors to the Oswego County Fair will be able to test the county’s new voting machines by answering a series of questions about their favorite ice cream, tv show, movie, and other topics at a demonstration sponsored by the Oswego County Board of Elections.
The fair takes place Wednesday, July 1 through Sunday, July 5, at the Oswego County Fairgrounds in Sandy Creek.
The Board of Elections will demonstrate the new equipment in the County Economic Development and Tourism Building, located across from the 4-H livestock ring near the main entrance to the fairgrounds.
Election Commissioners Donald Wart and William Scriber said that new “optical scanner” voting machines will be used throughout Oswego County in the Sept. 15 Primary Election and the Nov. 3 General Election. Oswego County is one of 18 counties in the state to participate in the voting machine pilot program to test the new machines.
Elections staff will hold a series of demonstrations this summer for the public. The state has provided a sample ballot containing nine questions. Voters use a pen to mark their choices. The ballot is then inserted into the scanner device and the results are tallied. Results will be announced after the fair is over.
The optical scanner machines will replace all of the old lever-style voting machines in all polling districts in the county. For information, contact the Board of Elections at 349-VOTE or stop by the office at 185 E. Seneca St., Oswego. Voter registrations forms are available on line at www.oswegocounty.com/boe/index.html.
