15th Annual Oswego County Pro – Am Tournament Set for July 11 and 12
OSWEGO – Lake Ontario’s top professional and amateur anglers will be vying for thousands of dollars in cash and merchandise prizes the weekend of July 11 and 12, when Oswego County’s 15th annual Pro-Am Salmon and Trout Team Tournament takes place out of the ports of Oswego, Mexico, and Port Ontario. The tournament is the third in a four-county series on Lake Ontario.
The Oswego County event kicks off with an optional contest, the Fat Nancy’s/A-Tom-Mik Shootout on Friday, July 10. Pro-Am teams will fish Saturday and Sunday, and winners will be announced Sunday afternoon. Boats may launch from marinas in Oswego and Mexico and the Selkirlk Lighthouse at Port Ontario.
Applications and rules are posted online at www.lakeontarioproam.net, and are available from the Oswego County Tourism Office at 315-349-8322. The deadline for walk-in applications is noon Wednesday, July 1, at the Oswego County Tourism Office, 46 E. Bridge St., Oswego. For information e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org. Anyone interested in serving as an official observer for a Pro-Am team may contact Turner at 315-349-8322 or by email.
Weigh-ins, which are open to the public, will take place at the tournament headquarters tent behind the Best Western Captain’s Quarters Hotel on East First Street, Oswego. All catches must be in line by 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The awards ceremony will be Sunday afternoon at approximately 4 p.m.
“Oswego County’s event is one of four competitions that comprise the Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon Pro-Am series,” said David Turner, tournament director and director of the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.
The first two tournaments in the series were held earlier this summer in Niagara and Orleans counties. The final event will be July 18 and 19 in Wayne County. “The competition is designed for those who consider themselves as among the most skilled competitors, and the Lake Ontario Challenge Cup provides an additional contest to determine the most consistent fishermen on Lake Ontario,” said Turner. “The title goes to the professional and amateur teams that the compile the highest number of points after all four tournaments are completed.”
In addition to the traditional two-day competition for professional and amateur teams, this year’s event offers amateur teams the opportunity to compete in an open division either Saturday or Sunday. The open division gives smaller amateur teams the chance to participate in the Pro-Am events without the need to include an observer. They may choose to fish the Saturday event, the Sunday event, or both events. Deadline to register for the open division is Wednesday, July 8.
Similar to the “pre-fish Friday” derby, teams fishing the open division will weigh in their three best fish. Daily prizes will be awarded based on the field of competitors each day.
The second annual Pre-Fish Friday A-Tom-Mik/Fat Nancy’s Shootout takes place Friday, July 10. Anglers do not need to fish the Pro-Am to enter the event. Weigh-in starts at noon on Friday at the Pro-Am headquarters tent behind the Captain’s Quarters Hotel. Entry is $100 cash. The tournament pays 10 places, based on 60 entrants. Observers aren’t needed and there is no minimum age requirement. Register at Fat Nancy’s in Pulaski or through Tom Allen at email@example.com. The registration deadline is Thursday, July 9.
