Oswego County's Salmon River to be Featured on The Sportsman Channel TV

ALTMAR, NY -- A 30-minute segment featuring Oswego County's world class fishing on the Salmon River will air nationally over The Sportsman Channel next week. The footage for “Angling the Great Lakes” was filmed over Columbus Day weekend and was coordinated by the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.

The segment, which features the height of the Chinook salmon run in the Lake Ontario tributaries, will run nationally on The Sportsman Channel on the following times and dates: Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2:30 a.m.; Christmas Day, 7:30 a.m.; Saturday, Dec. 26, 8:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 27, 6 p.m.

“We worked extensively with Fran Verdoliva, Salmon River Program Coordinator for the state Department of Environmental Conservation, and Steve Murphy of Brookfield Power, and had excellent support and assistance from a number of local businesses,” said David Turner, director of Community Development, Tourism and Planning. “The DEC and Brookfield Power sponsored funding for the program. Fox Hollow Lodge and Salmon Heaven Lodge, both of Altmar, provided accommodations for the film crew. Local fishing guides Patrick Ross and John Kopy donated their guiding services. They caught some fish, had a good stay, and had an excellent filming opportunity.”

“These local businesses, along with the DEC, dedicated a tremendous amount time and of effort to the filming project,” said Turner. “We are very appreciative of their assistance and support.”

The episode is the second in a series that promotes fishing and recreational activities in Oswego County. The first episode, filmed in late July, featured fishing experiences on Lake Ontario, Oswego's Harborfest, museums, and other community attractions.

“The series producer, Brian Smith, has expressed an interest in returning to Oswego County to help us build Oswego County as a destination for family outdoor activities,” said Turner.

The Oswego County segments are scheduled to run again next Spring and Summer when “Angling the Great Lakes” airs on ABC and CBS affiliates in the Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic regions.

The first Oswego County episode of “Angling the Great Lakes” aired in early December. It can be viewed online at www.atgltv.com.
