Youth Bureau Holds Youth Court Training in July

The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau is sponsoring a training class this summer for new members of the City and County Youth Court programs. Middle school and high school students who are entering grades eight through twelve can apply for the week-long program.

"Youth Court hears real cases of youthful offenders who are referred by local law enforcement agencies or schools for first-time minor offenses," said Brian Chetney, county youth court coordinator for the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau. "Students are trained to become judges, defense attorneys, prosecuting attorneys and court clerks. Members conduct hearings related to their cases and decide on the outcome and punishment for each case."

The Oswego Youth Court is a Family Court diversion program aimed at reducing juvenile delinquency in the city and county of Oswego.

"This program provides a valuable experience for its members," said Dawn Metott, city youth coordinator for the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau. "In addition to the benefit of helping their communities and influencing their peers in a positive way, members of Youth Court will learn or improve their public speaking, interviewing and writing skills."

Training will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, July 12 through Friday, July 16, at the Oswego City Hall, 13 W. Oneida St., Oswego.
