August is National Immunization Awareness Month

OSWEGO COUNTY - The Oswego County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are teaming up this August to ask the question, "Are you up-to-date on your vaccinations?"

"This month we are asking you to make sure that you and your loved ones are up-to-date on their vaccines," said Dr. Dennis Norfleet, Oswego County Director of Public Health. "Everyone, from infants to the elderly, needs vaccines to stay healthy throughout their lifetime."

Dr. Norfleet continued, "We no longer have to fear smallpox or wild poliovirus in the United States, thanks to vaccines. We also see very few cases of measles, diphtheria, rubella and pertussis. Although we have come a long way in preventing diseases through vaccinations, there are still preventable cases of disease in the U.S. each year. This is why it's so important to make sure that you're up-to-date on all of the vaccines you need."

To find out which vaccines you need, go to www.cdc.gov/vaccines. You can get your vaccinations by contacting your healthcare provider or by coming to one of the Oswego County Health Department's immunization clinics.

The Oswego County Health Department holds walk-in immunization clinics every Friday from 12:30. to 3:30 p.m. at the Nick Sterio Public Health Clinic, 70 Bunner St. in Oswego. They also conduct immunization clinics on the first and third Friday of every month from 9 to 11 a.m. at the H. Douglas Barclay Courthouse in Pulaski.

The Oswego County Health Department is also offering walk-in "Kindergarten through College" immunization clinics for back-to-school shots every Tuesday through Sept. 14 at the Nick Sterio Public Health Clinic in Oswego. The clinics run from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m.

If you have any questions about immunizations or would like more information, call your healthcare provider or the Oswego County Health Department weekdays at 315-349-3547 or 1-800-596-3200, ext. 3547.
