OSWEGO - Camp Hollis, a residential youth camp operated by Oswego County, was recently awarded a $5,000 EcoStar Grant from the Constellation Energy Foundation to help fund educational programs focused on environmental stewardship.

The grant will support improvements to the camp's existing natural resource programs and help to develop a series of new educational programs for children who attend Camp Hollis each summer, as well as the thousands of children and adults who visit the camp in its "off season" as part of school field trips, scouting events, youth advocacy programs and family events.

The EcoStar Grant will support Camp Hollis in:

  • Updating existing hiking trails so that they become self-directed and highlight unique plant life, animal habitats and natural resources.

  • Constructing new stations at the camp's pond, including an enhanced observation site, pond life experimentation center and water bird-feeding area.

  • Construct a bridge across a swampy area to complete trail updates.

  • Completing improvements to the camp's overnight camping area.

"The EcoStar grant has been a great opportunity for Camp Hollis to continue offering innovative and exciting environmental experiences for our campers," said Jim Farfaglia, senior youth services specialist for the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau. "Children who've come to camp for many years were excited to see new areas of interest, and new campers felt safe and welcome in the camp's natural surroundings."

EcoStar Grants are awarded to organizations that support Constellation Energy's long-standing commitment to protecting the environment. Funding was provided by the Constellation Energy Foundation, which launched its newly created EcoStar Grant program in January 2010.

EcoStar Grants were awarded to not-for-profit organizations with projects that fit into one or more of five stewardship categories: pollution prevention, education and outreach, energy efficiency, conservation and community activism. Camp Hollis' grant falls under the education and outreach category.

Constellation Energy Nuclear Group, a joint venture between Constellation Energy and EDF Group, owns and operates the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station in Scriba, N.Y.
