Byrne Dairy Partners with Oswego County to Promote Pulaski Area
"Welcome to Pulaski!" - New billboard on I-81 welcomes visitors to Pulaski, N.Y., the Salmon Capital of the East, thanks to a unique partnership with Byrne Dairy.
PULASKI - Thanks to a unique partnership with Byrne Dairy, visitors who are traveling north on I-81 will soon be greeted by a colorful billboard welcoming them to Pulaski, the Salmon Capital of the East.
The sign will be installed during the week of Aug. 30 near Pulaski Exit 36, just south of the new Byrne Dairy store on Route 13. The left half of the billboard advertises the Byrne Dairy store and the right half welcomes travelers to Pulaski and informs them to "exit now." The graphic shows a colorful photo of anglers fishing the Salmon River and displays Oswego County Tourism's web address and logo.
Barry Leemann, Chairman of the Oswego County Legislature, explained that Byrne Dairy approached the county and offered to donate unused billboard space because they wanted to help promote the area as a world-class fishing destination.
"We partner with businesses in many ways across Oswego County," said Legislator Leemann. "Byrne Dairy has been a good corporate neighbor. The company chose Pulaski as the location for its newest store in Oswego County, and wanted to work with us to bring northbound visitors into the village of Pulaski and the town of Richland. During these tough economic times, any assistance that we receive to bring business and visitors into the community is greatly appreciated."
Massive runs of Chinook and coho salmon make the Salmon River one of the top fishing destinations in New York State. According to a NYS DEC study, anglers spent more than $27 million while fishing the Salmon River in 2007.
Mark Byrne, Vice President of Store Operations for Byrne Dairy, said the company had access to a billboard near the northbound exit but had more space than it could use.
"We approached Oswego County and offered to share our billboard to help promote the area," said Byrne. "This arrangement makes sense and makes the best use of our advertising space. We're happy that the county is working with us and that we're able to do something positive for the community."
David Turner, director of the County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning, said the eye-catching billboard will help market the area to the thousands of soldiers and their families who travel north to Fort Drum and vacationers on their way to the Thousand Islands. An added benefit is that it meets one of the goals of a recent comprehensive plan developed jointly by the Town of Richland and the Village of Pulaski at no cost to the community.
"When Byrne Dairy offered to donate the space for the billboard and we considered that the community had identified in their plan the desire for a welcome sign on Interstate 81, we saw this as a perfect opportunity to help them fulfill that goal, at no cost to the village or the town," he said.
