Make an Appointment for Your Vaccination Today

The Oswego County Health Department will host a shingles vaccine clinic on Thursday, September 30 at Nick Sterio Public Health Clinic on Bunner Street in Oswego.

The clinic is open from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

"Shingles is a painful skin rash," said Dr. Dennis Norfleet, public health director of the Oswego County Health Department. "Symptoms can include pain, itching or tingling of the skin which is followed by a painful skin rash of blister-like lesions. Other symptoms can include fever, headache, chills and an upset stomach."

The shingles vaccine is a live virus vaccination that can reduce your chances of contracting shingles by up to 51 percent. It is recommended for adults aged 60 and older.

Dr. Norfleet said, "We suggest that all adults over the age of 60 get the vaccine because the symptoms of shingles are typically more severe in older individuals. You need only one dose to cut your chances of getting shingles in half."

The Oswego County Health Department also warns that some people may not be candidates for the vaccination. They include individuals who:

  • are allergic to antibiotic neomycin, or any component of the vaccine (including gelatin)

  • have active, untreated tuberculosis

  • are pregnant

  • have a weakened immune system caused by cancer treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy

  • are taking steroids or any medications that may weaken your immune system

  • are diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, or cancer of the lymph, bone, or blood

Anyone interested in receiving the shingles vaccine must schedule an appointment by going to www.ehealthscheduling.com/oswego or calling 315-349-3547. Due to a limited supply of the vaccine, no one will be seen without an appointment.

The cost of the vaccine is $20; however, no one will be turned away because of an inability to pay.
