Oswego County Health Department Announces Flu Clinics for Adults

The Oswego County Health Department announced today that influenza clinics for people ages 19 and up will begin in October. Clinics will be held Wednesdays, Oct. 13, Oct. 20 and Oct. 27. The clinics are by appointment only and will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Clinics for children will be held when age specific vaccine becomes available.

Each year, on average, 36,000 Americans die of complications from the flu, and more than 200,000 are hospitalized. The easiest and best way to prevent flu is by getting vaccinated.

The usual flu season starts in October and sometimes lasts until April.

"This is the perfect time to get vaccinated against influenza," said Dr. Dennis Norfleet, Director of Public Health. "While the timing of the flu season and its severity are unpredictable, flu is certain to be in our community and the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from this serious respiratory disease is to get a flu vaccine."

This flu season there is only one vaccine. It includes protection against the H1N1 virus as well as two other flu viruses. Adults will only need to receive one shot this year.

Dr. Norfleet urges everyone to "take the time to get yourself and your family vaccinated. Everyone six months and older should get a flu shot," he said.

The vaccine is available from many health care providers, community health centers, and some pharmacies. Check www.flu.gov to see if any vaccine clinics are scheduled at retail outlets near you.

To schedule an appointment for a flu vaccine go to www.oswegocounty.com and click on the link, go to https://www.ehealthscheduling.com/Oswego, or call 315-349-3547. The cost of getting the vaccine is $30, and is covered by Medicaid and Medicare Part B. Patients should bring their insurance cards to the clinics.
