Farmers Have Until Jan. 31 to Apply for Ag District Inclusion
Farmers in Oswego County may apply to have additional farmland included in the county agricultural district between Jan. 2 and Jan. 31, 2011. Applicants should demonstrate that the land meets the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets' criteria of being "predominantly viable agricultural land." More information on Agriculture Districts can be found on the Department of Agriculture and Market's Web site at www.agmkt.state.ny.us/AP/agservices/agdistricts.html.
The county Agricultural District comprises about 90,000 acres in portions of towns across Oswego County. The Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board will evaluate all requests. The board's recommendations will be referred to the Oswego County Legislature and then sent to the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. The state agency will make the final decision on whether land should be included.
Anyone with questions regarding the process or needing an application may call Jonathan Schell, Agriculture Team Coordinator, at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County, phone 315-963-7286, ext.200. Applications should be submitted to Ted Jerrett, Clerk of the Legislature, 46 East Bridge Street, Oswego, NY 13126.
