Legislature Chairman Leemann Announces Standing Committee Assignments

OSWEGO - Oswego County Legislature Chairman Barry Leemann (District 4, Amboy) today announced appointments to the County Legislature's standing committees for 2011. The seven committees oversee departments of county government and make budgetary and policy recommendations to the full Legislature.

The new standing committees are:

  • Community and Consumer Affairs: Terry Wilbur (District 21, Hannibal), chairman; John Martino (District 6, Hastings), vice chairman; Daniel Chalifoux (District 19, Minetto); Kevin Gardner (District 13, New Haven); Robert Hayes (District 10, Phoenix); Douglas Malone (District 20, Town of Oswego); and James Karasek (District 22, Granby). The committee oversees the Board of Elections, Central Services Department, County Clerk's Office, Real Property Tax Service, and Weights and Measures Office. Meetings are held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, two weeks before the full Legislature meeting.

  • Economic Development and Planning: Fred Beardsley (District 9, Central Square), chairman; Morris Sorbello (District 23, Granby), vice chairman; Shawn Doyle (District 3, Pulaski); Mary Flett (District 17, Oswego); Louella LeClair (District 25, Fulton); Jacob Mulcahey (District 15, Oswego); and Arthur Ospelt (District 12, Pennellville). The committee oversees the Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning along with several authorized agencies. It meets at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, two weeks before the full Legislature meeting.

  • Finance and Personnel: Arthur Ospelt (District 12, Pennellville), chairman; Michael Kunzwiler (District 18, Oswego), vice chairman; Fred Beardsley (District 9, Central Square); Louella LeClair (District 25, Fulton); Milferd Potter (District 2, Orwell); John Proud (District 7, Mexico); and Morris Sorbello (District 23, Granby). The committee oversees the County Audit Office, County Administrator's Office, County Treasurer's Office, Personnel Department and Purchasing Department. Meetings are scheduled at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, one week prior to the full Legislature meeting.

  • Health and Human Services: John Proud (District 7, Mexico), chairman; Jacob Mulcahey (District 15, Oswego), vice chairman; Barbara Brown (District 8, Palermo); James Karasek (District 22, Granby); Margaret Kastler (District 1, Sandy Creek); Ronald Sakonyi (District 5, Constantia); and Terry Wilbur (District 21, Hannibal). The committee oversees the Department of Social Services, Health Department, Office for the Aging, Veterans' Services and Youth Bureau. The committee meets at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, two weeks before the full Legislature meeting.

  • Infrastructure and Facilities: James Oldenburg (District 14, Scriba), chairman; Barbara Brown (District 8, Palermo), vice chairwoman; Daniel Chalifoux; Mark Fruce (District 24, Fulton); Linda Lockwood (District 11, Volney); Milferd Potter (District 2, Orwell); and Amy Tresidder (District 16, Oswego). The Infrastructure and Facilities Committee oversees the County Airport, Buildings and Grounds Department, Highway Department, Solid Waste Department and the Energy Recovery Facility. Meetings are held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, two weeks before the full Legislature meeting.

  • Public Safety and Emergency Services: Linda Lockwood (District 11, Volney), chairwoman; Margaret Kastler (District 1, Sandy Creek), vice chairwoman; Shawn Doyle (District 3, Pulaski); Mary Flett (District 17, Oswego); Kevin Gardner (District 13, New Haven); John Martino (District 6, Hastings); and Amy Tresidder (District 16, Oswego). The committee oversees the E-911 Program, Emergency Management Office, Fire Coordinator's Office, Probation Department and Sheriff's Office. It meets at 2 p.m. on Monday, two weeks prior to the full Legislature meeting.

  • Strategic Planning and Government: Milferd Potter (District 2, Orwell), chairman; Robert Hayes (District 10, Phoenix), vice chairman; Mark Fruce (District 24, Fulton); Michael Kunzwiler (District 18, Oswego), Douglas Malone (District 20, Town of Oswego); James Oldenburg (District 14, Scriba); and Ronald Sakonyi (District 5, Constantia). The committee oversees the Clerk of the Legislature's Office, County Attorney's Office, County Legislature and Office of the Chairman, and the District Attorney's Office. Meetings are scheduled at 10 a.m. on Monday, two weeks before the full Legislature meeting.
