FULTON, NY - Thousands of snowmobile racers, owners and spectators are expected to take part in the 11th annual Great Eastern Whiteout Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12 and 13, at the Fulton War Memorial and nearby Lake Neahtahwanta on NYS Route 3. The vintage snowmobile show and races are hosted by the Fulton Area Snow Travelers (FAST).
The event is considered the largest antique snowmobile show in the Northeast, said show coordinator Joe Raechal.
Antique and vintage sleds will be on display Saturday outside the War Memorial, with a parade of sleds from 1 to 2 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in several categories beginning at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Vintage snowmobiles will race on an oval track all day Saturday on Lake Neahtahwanta. Drag racing on the lake begins at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Drivers can also take part in the 100-mile "Bun Bun Enduro Run" or a 15-mile vintage trail ride Sunday morning.
Vendors and dealers of used sleds and parts will be located outside on the grounds and inside the War Memorial. Refreshments will be available throughout the event.
Raechal said old snowmobile lovers from 11 states and four Canadian provinces are expected to show their sleds or compete in the event. Last year the prize for the furthest traveled went to Jim Mehney, from 600 miles away in Dewitt, Michigan.
"Oswego County is well-known for its ability to handle the abundant snowfall that we receive," said Dave Turner, director of the County Department of Community Development, Tourism, and Planning. "Our snowmobile clubs do a fantastic job of maintaining and grooming more than 360 miles of snowmobile trails. We welcome all the riders and spectators, and wish everyone a most successful Whiteout."
Visitors will also have a chance to purchase tickets and take home a 1971 Arctic Lynx 292CC snowmobile, donated by the Fulton Area Snow Travelers. All proceeds will go to the Golisano Children's Hospital in Syracuse. Other fundraisers will benefit the Oswego County BOCES scholarship fund.
There will be a "Whiteout Warmup" from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11 at the Riverside Inn in Fulton. Entry forms for the show and races are available online at www.thegreateasternwhiteout.net.
