Symposium at Colgate Is Planned for Arts, Museums and Cultural Heritage Attractions
HAMILTON, NY - The New York Cultural Heritage Tourism Network, a coalition of museums, historic sites, and regional tourism agencies, will sponsor a Cultural Heritage Tourism Symposium at Colgate University Friday, March 18.
The theme of the event is "Bridges to the Future: Empowerment through Collaboration in Cultural Heritage Tourism." The conference is designed to help large and small organizations and attractions increase visitors, develop partnerships, and learn about funding opportunities for the region's cultural heritage assets.
"This conference is for cultural heritage attractions such as museums, historical societies, and anyone who needs to drive more tourism business to their own front door," said Spike Herzig, director of the New York Cultural Heritage Tourism Network and president of the Herzig Group. "In Central New York we have a rich history and many diverse art museums and historic sites. There is great potential in increasing visitation by working together. Research shows that cultural heritage travelers consistently spend more money and stay longer in an area than other types of visitors."
Keynote speaker Cheryl Hargrove specializes in cultural and heritage tourism, marketing communications and strategic planning. She has consulted with more than 50 national, regional, state and local organizations for cultural heritage tourism assessment, planning, development and/or marketing technical assistance.
Working with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Hargrove has an extensive background in marketing historic and cultural assets. She has presented at more than 100 conferences and conventions including the National Tour Association, the 1998 Leadership Conference on Cultural Tourism, Yunnan Province, China, and the Museum Association of Canada.
Representatives of the New York State Preservation League, the Seward House Museum, the Rosamund Gifford Foundation, regional tourism agencies, and several other organizations will participate in workshops that focus on "Grants and Funding," "Cultural Heritage Success and Failure," and "Communication, Cooperation and Coordination."
