County Offers Critical Incident Stress Management Training Classes

Fulton - Oswego County Emergency Medical Services will conduct Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) training for public safety and mental health professionals who wish to join the County CISM team. This two-day course will be held Dec. 2 and 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Constellation Energy Joint Information Center at 10 Airport Drive in Fulton

The course, "Group Crisis Intervention," will result in a certificate of completion from the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. This course is designed to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum.

"This course is important because the team members help their first-responder colleagues and others following a traumatic call," said Team Leader Mark Murray. "The purpose is to try to keep providers in the field by giving them someone to talk to after dealing with horrific calls or calls dealing with children." Debriefings are held for anyone following a traumatic event, including the emergency-medical services, fire or law-enforcement providers, dispatchers, nurses, or anyone else involved on such a call.

The Group Crisis Intervention course will prepare participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services. Fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management will be outlined and participants will leave with the knowledge and tools to provide several group crisis interventions, specifically demobilizations, defusing and the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing process. The need for appropriate follow-up services and referrals when necessary will also be discussed.

"Critical Incident Stress debriefing doesn't solve every problem, but team members can tell a difference in providers affected by a trauma after a briefing," Murray said. This course is designed for anyone in the fields of business and industry crisis intervention, disaster response, education, emergency services, employee assistance, health care, homeland security, mental health, military, spiritual care, and traumatic stress.

Completion of this course is required for those wishing to become a member of the Oswego County CISM team. This team provides services to members of public safety agencies who have been involved in stressful incidents in order to assist them in dealing with critical incidents and disasters.

Attendance at the course on both days is required for completion. There is no cost for those wishing to participate. Those wishing to register may call James D. Jones, County EMS Coordinator at 315-591-9110, no later than Nov. 18.

Oswego County EMS is also offering refresher training for current members of the Oswego County CISM team on Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., also at the Constellation Energy Joint Information Center at 10 Airport Drive in Fulton. The purpose of this course is to provide current CISM team members with an integrated synopsis of program innovations, consensus reviews, and research findings relevant to crisis and disaster mental health intervention. There is no cost for those wishing to participate. Those wishing to register for the refresher training may call Jones at 315-591-9110, no later than Nov. 1.
