Office for the Aging Organizes New Caregiver Support Group
November is National Family Caregivers' Month -
OSWEGO - The Oswego County Office for the Aging has announced a new caregiver support group, "Creative Caregivers," for people providing care to a loved one over the age of 60. This group will include a creative activity for participants during meeting times.
The group will meet at 2 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month in the Salvation Army Building on 73 W. Second St. in Oswego. All are welcome to attend. There is no charge to participate.
"The formation of this group is appropriate since November is National Family Caregiver's Month, created in order to thank, support, educate and empower family caregivers," said Margaret Waters, caregiver coordinator for the local Office for the Aging. "National Family Caregiver's Month was first signed as a presidential proclamation in 1997 by President Bill Clinton, and was promoted by the National Family Caregivers Association."
Numerous support groups are offered throughout Oswego County. These groups include:
Waters said her office is planning two additional groups to start meeting during 2012.
"One will be a monthly educational group, open to the public, with guest speakers to discuss various topics and services which are important to seniors and their families, and the second group will be for those who are being cared for, to give them an opportunity to talk with others about their issues and experiences," said Waters.
