Youth Bureau Will Award Mini Grants for Youth Projects

OSWEGO - The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau is accepting applications for the 2012 mini-grant program. A limited amount of funding will be awarded to not-for-profit community organizations that provide non-sectarian activities for youth during hours when school is not in session. Community organizations can apply for up to $1,000. Projects must be completed by the end of 2012 and provide a direct service to children and families in Oswego County.

"Grants will be highly competitive because the amount of state funds allocated for youth development projects has been significantly reduced," said Kathleen Fenlon, Director of the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.

The grants are funded by Oswego County government and the NYS Office of Children and Family Services Youth Development Delinquency Prevention program. Projects must have clear and measurable goals and address the diverse interests of youth.

"Although there has been a large loss of state aid to Youth Bureau programs over the past two years, the Oswego County Youth Bureau Board has worked hard to set aside some funding for mini-grants," said Fenlon. "Mini-grants provide an opportunity for community organizations to work together and come up with creative ways to provide a diverse group of activities that meet the interests of a wide group of youth. Very often, mini-grants have served as seed money to initiate activities that continue on with other support in future years."

Applications are due by June 8, 2012. Not-for-profit organizations, including agencies, schools, libraries, municipalities, associations, and churches may apply for funding. Organizations are encouraged to involve youth in the planning and implementation of the project.

Those interested are encouraged to call Brian Chetney or Kathleen Fenlon at the Youth Bureau to discuss their ideas, receive assistance and obtain an application. Call 349-3451 or 1-800-596-3200, ext. 3451, or e-mail Kathleen Fenlon at kathyf@oswegocounty.com.
