Oswego AmeriCorps Announces Openings at Sites Around Oswego County

OSWEGO - Oswego AmeriCorps is accepting applications for 900-hour positions that will start Oct. 1 at sites around Oswego County. AmeriCorps, a national service program, is known as the domestic Peace Corps. Oswego AmeriCorps members work with youth by providing mentoring, fitness and nutrition education. AmeriCorps members also perform a community service project as part of their service.

Openings are in the APW School District, Catholic Charities of Oswego County, Driving Books Home, Fairgrieve Elementary School, Fulton Family YMCA, Hannibal High School, Housing Visions, Lanigan Elementary School, Leighton Elementary School, Mexico Elementary School, New Haven Elementary School, Oswego Community Christian School, Oswego YMCA Advantage After School, and Palermo Elementary School.

AmeriCorps members in 900-hour positions receive a modest living allowance of $6,399 paid in biweekly pay checks. At the end of their term of service, 900-hour members receive an education award of $2,775 which can be used to pay tuition or student loans at qualified institutions. Members who are age 55 or older at the time of their start in AmeriCorps can transfer the education award to their children or grandchildren. AmeriCorps members can receive forbearance on qualified student loans. If the term of service is completed successfully, all or part of the interest that accrued during the term can be paid by the National Service Trust.

Applicants should have some prior experience working with youth. Applicants must be 17 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED. There is no upper age limit. Specific sites may request additional work experience or education.

Most sites are looking for individuals who are available during the school day. Several sites have evening hours. Recent college graduates and students taking on-line classes are encouraged to apply. The member application can be downloaded from the Oswego County website at http://oswegocounty.com/forms/youth/application.pdf

In honor of the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, Oswego AmeriCorps will host a service project at the Arts, Crafts and Kites Festival at Fort Ontario from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. Festival participants can make holiday cards that will be sent to U.S. military.
