Enjoy a Flurry of Activities at the Oswego County Winter Carnival
SANDY CREEK – The second annual Oswego County Winter Carnival returns to Sandy Pond on Saturday and Sunday, February 9 and 10. From dawn to dusk, bring the whole family to the Sandy Pond Steakhouse on Wigwam Drive, just off county Route 15 in Sandy Creek.
On Saturday, February 9, the day begins at 6 a.m. with the Sandy Pond Ice Fishing Tournament. Dog sled rides run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the “Chillin’ Chili Cook-off” opens at 11 a.m. The “Polar Bear Plunge” starts at 1 p.m., followed by awards ceremonies for the plunge and fishing tournament from 3 to 4 p.m. A perch fry is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. and a Lighted Snowmobile Night Parade begins at 5:30 p.m. Live entertainment by the John Glenn Band wraps up the night from 7 to 9 p.m.
The ice fishing tournament opens at 6 a.m. on Sunday, February 10, followed by dog sled rides from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A cross-country ski tour starts at 11 a.m. and the snowshoe beach walk heads out at 1 p.m. An awards ceremony for the fishing tournament is scheduled from 3 to 4 p.m. and the day concludes with another perch fry from 3 to 5 p.m.
Registration for the Sandy Pond Ice Fishing Tournament begins at 6 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, February 9 and 10. The fee is $10 for adults and $5 for children age 12 and younger per day. Weigh-in takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. and prizes are awarded from 3 to 4 p.m. on both days. Separate divisions for youth and adults each award first place in the pike category and panfish combo.
Registration for the “Polar Bear Plunge” opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 9. The cost is $25 per person and includes a free hooded sweatshirt. First and second prizes will be awarded to the largest teams as well as to the individuals and teams who raise the most money. “Best Plunge Attire” awards will also be given to the top two best-dressed individuals and teams.
All proceeds will benefit the Salmon River International Sportfishing Museum on state Route 13 near Pulaski. Visit the museum to see hundreds of historic items on display; including homemade antique fishing rods, rare lures, reels, tackle and a significant library of books, watercolors and prints. These exhibits were once showcased at the Gladding Corporation�s museum, believed to be the nation�s first sportfishing museum. For museum hours, call 315-298-2213.
