Oswego Youth Court Will Hold Summer Training Program

OSWEGO - Youth who are interested in helping out in their community and learning more about the public justice system are encouraged to apply for the Oswego Youth Court training class which will be held this summer in Oswego.

Youth Court is designed to give middle school and high school students first-hand experience in the judicial process, and serves youth who commit crimes which are not typically addressed in Family Court. Youth Court members hear cases involving juvenile offenders and sentence them to a fair punishment.

"This experience was one of the best I have ever had," said Matthew McLaughlin, an Oswego AmeriCorps and Youth Court member. "You get to experience real cases and a chance to help out your community. This program helps with public speaking skills and writing skills."

Youth Court members complete a 20-hour training program. Students will learn the skills necessary for the judicial process and learn from guest speakers ranging from attorneys to city police. The training ends with a trip to Oswego County Public Safety Center and with mock trials that the youth participate in.

Youth Court training will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 8 through 12 at Oswego City Hall. Those interested may call the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau weekdays at 315-349-3575, pick up an application at middle and high school guidance offices or visit www.oswegony.org/DEPT_youth.html . Applications are due July 3, 2013.
