Are you interested in serving your community while earning money for school? Do you want to be part of a team that improves the lives of youth in Oswego County? The Oswego AmeriCorps program is seeking applications for the 2013-2014 AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps members serve with Oswego County schools and non-profits by mentoring, providing fitness and nutrition education, and managing volunteers.
Applications are currently being accepted for 900-hour AmeriCorps positions that will start on Oct. 1. Positions are available at Catholic Charities of Oswego County, Fulton Family YMCA, Hannibal High School, Lanigan Elementary School, Oswego, Mexico Elementary School, New Haven Elementary School, Oswego Community Christian School and Oswego YMCA.
Most sites are looking for individuals who are available during the school day. Recent college graduates and students taking on-line classes are encouraged to apply. AmeriCorps, a national service program, is known as the domestic Peace Corps. Members in 900-hour positions receive a modest living allowance of $6,527 paid in biweekly pay checks. At the end of their term of service, 900-hour members receive an education award of $2,775 which can be used to pay tuition or student loans at qualified institutions.
Members who are age 55 or older at the time of their start in AmeriCorps can transfer the education award to their children or grandchildren. AmeriCorps members can receive forbearance on qualified student loans. If the term of service is completed successfully, all or part of the interest that accrued during the term can be paid by the National Service Trust.
Applicants should have some prior experience working with youth. Applicants must be at least 17 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED. There is no upper age limit. Specific sites may require additional work experience or education.
