Aerial Spraying Completed in Oswego County

OSWEGO COUNTY - Aerial spraying of the Toad Harbor / Big Bay Swamp area near the north shore of Oneida Lake was completed last night, Thursday, September 19.

The area sprayed included about 10,000 acres within these boundaries: U.S. Route 11 in Central Square to the west, NYS Route 49 to the north, up to but not including the village of Constantia to the east; and the shoreline of Oneida Lake to the south. Spraying did not take place over the waters of Oneida Lake.

The health department contracted with Duflo Spray-Chemical Inc. from Lowville to conduct the aerial spraying. The product Kontrol 30-30, which contains permethrin, was applied in a diluted form.

Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang emphasizes that aerial spraying is a temporary and partial control measure. People should continue to limit their outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active, and wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, shoes and socks when outdoors. Insect repellents that contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus are also effective and should be used with caution according to label instructions.

A copy of the Kontrol 30-30 pesticide label with MSDS and all warnings, along with fact sheets about permethrin aerial spraying can be found on the Oswego County Web site at www.oswegocounty.com/health/index.html or by calling the Oswego County Health Department at 349-3564 or 1-800-596-3200, ext. 3564, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
