Oswego County AmeriCorps Expands to Economic Development Corps

OSWEGO - The Oswego AmeriCorps launched a new program in February that provides financial literacy and housing services to economically disadvantaged individuals in the county.The Oswego Economic Development Corps supplements the mentoring, fitness and nutrition activities for youth that AmeriCorps has provided locally for several years.

Administered by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, AmeriCorps celebrated its 17th year of service to Oswego County in October. "Every day in communities across America, AmeriCorps members are making a powerful impact on the most critical issues facing our nation," said AmeriCorps program coordinator Kathy Andolina. "This year AmeriCorps celebrates its 20th anniversary of providing services across the U.S. AmeriCorps members are 'getting things done' by improving schools, rebuilding after disasters, providing health services, preserving the environment, or supporting veterans and military families." Andolina said there are still opportunities for Oswego County residents to join AmeriCorps in 2014. There are currently openings in the Oswego Economic Development Corps and Oswego AmeriCorps will have many summer positions.

Members serving in the Oswego Economic Development Corps are Michael Butler and Mandy Coant, Department of Social Services; Amanda Calkins and Marie Demby, Oswego County Opportunities; and Theresa Kline, Alexis Ponte, Mary Simard, and Katelyn Winn, Catholic Charities.
