OSWEGO COUNTY - Aerial spraying of the remainder of the central Oswego County target area was completed on Saturday, August 9.

The entire target area encompassed approximately 22,775 acres in portions of the towns of Hastings, Mexico, New Haven, Palermo and Volney.

The approximate boundaries of the area are from the southern edge of the village of Mexico, a line from NY RT 69 to NY RT 3 along Munger Hill Road continuing west across NY RT 3 to Hurlbutt Road; Hurlbutt Road west to CR 64; CR 64 west to CR 6; CR 6 south to CR 4; CR 4 east to CR 35; CR 35 south to NY RT 3; NY RT 3 to CR 45; CR 45 east to Jackson Road; Jackson Road east to CR 4. CR 4 south east to the Palermo-Hastings town line; from the Palermo-Hastings town line north to CR 45; CR 45 east to French Street; French Street north to NY RT 69; and NY RT 69 north and west to Munger Hill Road.

The health department contracted with Duflo Spray-Chemical Inc. from Lowville to conduct the aerial spraying. The product Kontrol 30-30, which contains permethrin, was applied in a diluted form.

Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang emphasizes that aerial spraying is only a temporary and partial control measure.

"People should continue to limit their outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active, and wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, shoes and socks when outdoors," he said. "Insect repellents that contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus are also effective and should be used with caution according to label instructions."

A copy of the Kontrol 30-30 pesticide label with MSDS and all warnings, along with fact sheets about permethrin aerial spraying can be found on the Oswego County Web site at www.oswegocounty.com/health/index.html or by calling the Oswego County Health Department at 349-3564 or 1-800-596-3200, ext. 3564, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
